I am an English guide in charge of
Okuyama Hokoji temple & Ryotanji temple.

My proposal

One hour and a half ride away from Tokyo on ‘Hikari’ Bullet train, you will get to Hamamatsu Station. From the station one-hour bus ride will bring you to the scenery of paddy-fields with low hills, peculiar to Japanese countryside. In the midst of the rich nature stand zen temples where you will be leisurely spending the whole day. You can have authentic ‘Zen’ experiences here breazing in fresh air and forgetting everyday routines.

My personal information I would like to tell you

Born in 1952 Female English teacher / Guide: National Guide Certificate holder, STEPtest 1Grade

I’ve been working as an English teacher all my life. After passing 60, I challenged to become a certified guide. In my free time I enjoy traveling not only around Japan but also around the world always with the help of guides. Just a small stone shines with the explanation given by guides. They really help travelers understand a lot about the place and culture. I really wish to entertain tourists with easy to understand explanations and make their trips most memorable and pleasant just like the guides I have met and have been helped by.

Below is the sightseeing spot I provide the guiding service.

Sightseeing spot

Okuyama Hokoji temple …. This temple was built about 650 years ago. It is the head zen temple of Hokoji sect of Rinzai Zen. Its main hall is one of the largest wooden buildings in the western part of Shizuoka Prefecture. The temple lies in the mountainous area with several stuructures including a three-story pagoda. You walk in the woods to reach the main hall welcomed by five hundred stone Buddhistic statues on the way. Those statues are about knee high and each one of them has different facial expressions, sitting, standing or lying. Hokoji temple is an active zen temple and there are always some young monks practicing zen.
Ryotanji temple …. This temple was built about 1200years ago. It stands in the quiet countryside surrounded by paddy fields. About one thousand years ago it became a family temple of the Ii Family who had a great power during the Edo period in the shogunate government. Ryotanji temple is a zen temple and its dry zen garden was made by Kobori Enshu who was one of the most well known garden planners around 400 years ago. The garden is beautiful and you can sit in front of the garden quietly forgetting about your bustling daily life.

From Hamamatsu Station … bus ride (one hour)… Hokoji Temple Zen meditation experience (two or three hours)… special vegetarian zen lunch (one hour)… bus ride (15minutes)… Ryotanji temple zen dry rock garden (one hour and a half)…bus ride(fifty minutes)…Back to Hamamatsu Station

You can enjoy the whole day experiencing Zen, meditation, special zen lunch and zen garden in the quiet and beautiful nature away from everyday life.
